Chile Vacation Guide: From Santiago to the Lakes District, Which Location Would Be Right for You?

Regardless of why you’re going, a Chile vacation is unforgettable! There is plenty to do in this South American country. You can explore the wilderness, see geological formations, visit the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, go hiking, relax on the beach, etc. There are many intriguing places to visit. Be sure to go on a few guided tours to get the best out of your vacation.

Where should you visit? Santiago? North Chile? Puerto Mont? Chilean Patagonia? You can stay in a hotel in a tourist area or head off the beaten path.

Santiago

On a clear day, Santiago is one of the most spectacular looking cities in the world. If you take a glance through the buildings downtown, you will see a majestic circle of mountains. The Andean peaks are to the east and a coastal range is to the west. There are a large number of hotels and guesthouses in the capital city of Chile. The rates are far more affordable than those in other South American cities.

North Chile

In the northern part of Chile, there are two contrasting climatic regions: the Atacama Desert and the Altiplano. The Atacama Desert is the driest desert on Earth! The Altiplano Plateau was created by the ash of numerous volcanoes. It receives tropical rains in winter months. All along North Chile you will find traces of pre-Inca civilizations.

If you’re looking for an adventure during your vacation, you will find plenty of hiking and mountaineering opportunities in North Chile!

Puerto Montt and the Lakes District

Puerto Montt was founded by German immigrants in the mid-1800s. It is now the key port and business hub of the Lakes District. There’s really not enough to do in order to warrant a long stay, but you should still check Puerto Montt out if you get the chance. Tenglo Island is a short boat ride away. Spend a day visiting both places if you’re in the mood to explore the Lakes District.

Patagonia

Patagonia is one of the best-known regions in Chile. If you’re looking for a ski vacation, this is the best spot! The region is covered with Andean peaks and dazzling fjords. To the north of the area lies San Rafael Lagoon National Park. It has some of the most impressive ice fields in the world. In the southern stretch of Patagonia is the city of Punta Arenas.

There are other places to visit on a Chile vacation. You especially need to visit Easter Island if you get the chance!
